Hey Everyone! I usually talk about food, travel, and all sorts of stuff in between, but being overseas means struggling with depression can be even more difficult to manage at times. Instead of allowing ourselves to wallow in our hopelessness, it’s super important to try your hardest to get up and do something kind for yourself. I know many of you suffering, perhaps having a really low day while reading this, may be thinking, “yea quit telling me that!” but if you were in a good mood, and feeling lifted, motivated and happy, what would be your response to that? I thought I’d share my Healthy Depression Management and Lemon Balm Herbal Infusion with you all in hopes to reach someone. Even if it’s just ONE person, I’ll feel like I did some sort of service.
I love the “treat yo-self” way of life. More often than not, we don’t do that though, or when we do treat ourselves, we don’t really focus on it being a treat. Just, meh, another day. When we’re low, we don’t do those things. We curl up and wallow on the ugly thoughts, broken past, and when that takes over, we aren’t serving ourselves when we do that. So, what I do now, even when it’s extremely difficult, is a force myself to do something nice, like, ordering a pizza, since I don’t indulge that often these days. While I’m looking forward to my pizza, my mood is a tiny bit lifted because of the anticipation. I may take an extra long shower, and perhaps a little DIY spa/facial just to brighten my skin and mood.
I like to light a candle, put on my FAVORITE comfies and either listen to upbeat music, or watch something really funny. I recommend avoiding dark music and too serious of shows when you’re feeling blue. I also love to play video games too!
Now, speaking of lemon balm, I love herbalism and herbal infusions, teas, tinctures. The whole shabang! As much of an enthusiast I am, I don’t rely on everything I read on the internet, or rely on just an herb to make me feel better. However, it’s the fact that I am willing to do something nice for myself like make a soothing lemon balm infusion that boosts my mood even more. The aroma of silky citrus and a hint of sweetness from stevia really makes me feel nostalgic for some reason, and just puts me in a good mood. There is a ton of information from Eastern and Western medicine mentioning the usage of lemon balm, but for me, it’s more about the fact that I am willing to seek something out for myself to help me feel better, and I really hope you do as well.
To make a lemon balm infusion, simply stuff a heat-resistant vessel and pour in simmering water. Let it steep for 3-4 hours. Drink all at once. Infusions are a bit different than teas because you steep the herbs longer than you would a traditional tea, so according to master herbalists, you get more of the medicinal benefits that are offered. I do know however, that it tastes fantastic!
